Unwanted medication takeback day at Goodrich Pharmacy St Francis
Date: December 1, 2007 - 9:00am - 1:00pm
Goodrich Pharmacy and the St Francis Police department announce an unwanted medication takeback collection scheduled for December 1, 2007 from 9AM to 1 PM. This event will allow households in St Francis and surrounding communities to safely dispose of medications that are outdated or no longer needed.
Goodrich Pharmacy will have fact sheets available and will hold drawings for gifts for all households participating. Please bring medications in their original container if possible. We will accept your old medications, even if they were not filled at our pharmacy. Our hazardous waste hauler meets all HIPPA criteria, ensuring your medication information on your prescription vials will remain private. If you prefer, please black out your name and prescription number on your vial before you bring it in for disposal, but keep the medication information visible. We will not be accepting used syringes at this event. Please contact Goodrich Pharmacy if you have any questions about this event, or items you wish to dispose safely.
Many of the households in this area are on wells and septic systems. Disposing medications into a septic tank can contaminate area water. Antibiotics in a septic tank can also kill the good bacteria that help digest waste. Medication disposal into the sewer system has also attracted attention, since many of the country's sewage filtering systems are not able to filter out medications we excrete and dump into the waste system.
Recent news reports have highlighted the growing trends in illegal drug use. Unlike years past, when street drugs were the desired choice for getting "high," recent surveys have shown an increased preference for prescription drugs in recreational use. Disposing of unwanted or unused pain pills helps keep our community safe by limiting the supply of medications entering the illegal drug stream. St Francis Police Department will be disposing of these medications immediately after the event closes on Saturday, December 1.
If you are unable to attend, or would like more information on medication disposal, please visit Minnesota Pollution Control's website. They provide an excellent fact sheet (link listed below) that shows the steps to safely dispose of unwanted medications in your home when necessary.

Flu Shot Clinic in Goodrich Pharmacy St Francis
Date: November 17, 2007 - 11:00am - 2:00pm
Goodrich Pharmacy St Francis will be hosting another flu shot clinic Satruday November 17th from 11AM to 2 PM. A nurse will be present to provide flu shots for children age 4 and up.
If your child has never received a flu shot, and they are less than 9 years old, they will need to have two doses of flu vaccine, given 1 month apart. Children need this "booster" to build a strong defense against the flu. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with your clinic to ensure the second dose is received before flu season hits.
The cost is $25 per shot, and we are able to bill most Medicare and Medica plans for you with a zero co-pay. As of November 14th, we can also now bill Health Partners for you. Unfortunately we cannot bill Medicare if your coverage is through Unicare or UCARE for seniors.

DISTINGUISHED YOUNG PHARMACIST AWARD PRESENTED TO STEPHANIE DAVIS, PHARM.D.
The Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award is sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Companies and recognizes one young pharmacist, in practice less than 10 years, who has distinguished themselves in the field of pharmacy.
Davis works at Goodrich Pharmacy in Anoka. She has shown her dedication and commitment to pharmacy by providing the best possible patient outcomes through Medication Therapy Management (MTM). She is well recognized in her peer community, and willingly shares systems and ideas with other pharmacists to improve their professional abilities. She has helped prepare and deliver presentations on MTM at MPhA events and interest group meetings. She also presented to College of Pharmacy classes sharing her MTM experiences in real world practice settings.
She has attended the American Pharmacists Association’s Advanced Practice Institute in 2001 and 2006 and successfully completed the Immunization and Pharmaceutical Care certificate programs at the University of Minnesota. Davis supervises a diabetes rotation for pharmacy students that is in high demand and highly rated by her students. She has been the lead investigator of several Legend to OTC investigative studies and has been providing Medicare Part D MTM services to Minnesota Medicaid and HealthPartners patients since the program’s beginning.
One of her current projects includes working with returning National Guard personnel to help them reintegrate into their communities. This includes helping soldiers and their families optimize prescribed medications to better deal with the stress of returning home and re-adjusting to life with family, friends and the community. Davis is well-versed in the issues that face pharmacy, and never loses sight that whatever pharmacists do, it must be good for the patient and maximize patient outcomes.
The Minnesota Pharmacists Association is proud to honor Stephanie Davis with the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, and congratulate her on all her dedication and achievements.
